Hellenic Academic Libraries Union Catalog (HALUC) is, today, the physical implementation part of the first, out of four, aims of Hellenic Academic Libraries Link (HEAL-LINK) and also of its second aim, as they are reported in the article 17 of law no.3404/2005 (ΦΕΚ/Α/260/17.10.2005): “the coordinated development of the collections of the member-libraries, the implementation of Interlibrary Loan Network in national level, the creation of common strategic plan with regard to access in electronic resources’ content, aiming at more efficient information resources’ management and the adoption of common performance standards and indicators concerning their services.  ”.
The pilot phase of HALUC  implementation took place during the years 1999-2003, as part of the larger project “Networking of the Libraries of the Hellenic Higher Education Institutions”, funded by the “Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training I” (O.P. "Education I"). From 2003, the project, which was funded by the “Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training II” (O.P. "Education II"), was carried on and it was completed on May 2007, when the first version of HALUC was issued. In 2008, HALUC was connected with the Central Interlibrary Loan Software VDX, as well as with the Hellenic Interlibrary Loan Network “Iris” and in parallel its 3nd version was issued. HALUC 4th edition was issued in 2009. Its 5th edition was issued in 2010, containing 60 bibliographic databases. In January 2011 was issued HALUC 6th edition, consisting of 3.579.098 bibliographic records, contained in 63 bibliographic databases of 54 HALUC member-libraries. In February 2012 was issued HALUC 7th edition, which consists of 3.917.519 bibliographic records, contained in 68 bibliographic databases of 58 HALUC member-libraries, while in October 2012 was issued HALUC 8th edition, which consists of 3.964.785 bibliographic records, contained in 68 bibliographic databases of 58 HALUC member-libraries.HALUC aims at:
      •economising resources and providing improved services for supporting teaching and research within academic, as well as other institutions, via (a) the periodical renewal of its bibliographical database and (b) its expansion to other libraries, so as it can continually be a physical union catalog, which aggregates the bibliographic wealth of Hellenic Academic Libraries and of other institutions’ libraries and which consists of a usable and reliable search tool for scientific information in the disposal of the Hellenic Higher & Technological Education Institutions’ students and staff, as well as in the disposal of every one;
      •coordinating the development of the collections of the member-libraries, since it is a physical union catalog which inevitably isolates faults in member-libraries’ catalogs and suggests solutions in the context of cooperation and cohesion;
      •maintaining, as well as, expanding the interlibrary loan service into a national range and in ways that facilitate and promote material circulation among users of different libraries.
